In the Western Cape there are 3 age divisions being played on a weekly basis that is part of the WPIHA local league. Those are:
This league hosts players aged 12 years and younger, as part of a non-contact league. At present there are two teams in this division, Penguins and Storm. Peewee games are played on Sunday mornings from 10am.
This league hosts players from 13 years of age, as part of a contact league. This league hosts three teams one of which is an all girls team, Griffins along with Penguins and Storm. Intermedaite games are played on Monday nights as part of the "Monday night is hockey night" campaign from 18:30.
This league hosts players of advanced skill and body development and generally hosts players from 18 years and up. This league hosts two teams following with the player development of Penguins and Storm. The senior games are played in the optimal time slot from 20:00 on Monday nights and are a crowd pleaser.
The South African Super League (SASL) restarted in 2015 since its last appearance in 2002, this is a national league showcasing the top players in the country in a 3 team round-robin tournament lasting 15 games over the space of roughly 3 months. The games are played in Cape Town, Pretoria and Gauteng with each team making a road appearance.
WPIHA's premier ice hockey team is called the Cape Town KINGS and they battle in honour of all that is Cape Town (The Castle, Table Mountain, The Ocean, ...). The SASL also serves as comprehensive trials for players who wish to make the Senior National team.
Annually SA sends four national teams to take part in the various IIHF World Championships namely, U18, U20, Women and Seniors. Cape Town has hosted IIHF tournaments on numerous occassions with huge success, namely 2013 when SA Seniors won GOLD on home ice
