Dear Members

We have come to the end of 2007 very quickly. Thanks to all of you who supported our Ice Hockey Prizegiving at the Italian Club earlier this month. Congratulations to Sharks Int B who won the Int B league, and to Rams Int A who won the Int A league. Rams also won the overall League Trophy – well done. See all the 2007 achievers here.

The lucky draw for the laptop computer was done at our prizegiving, and it was won by Jason Salo, who was ecstatic to find out he was the winner and wants to know when the club is having the next raffle! (you will see a picture of him on our website too) The lucky ticket was sold by Keenan Marrow – well done. Some of the proceeds from the raffle ticket sales will be used to subsidise our players who are travelling overseas next year for IIHF Ice Hockey Championshiops, and also for new kit next year.

PLANS FOR 2008

Biggest plans are that wedding bells are ringing for coach, Ronnie Wood, who will be getting married on 15th March to Natalie Bosman. This is exciting news, and we wish both of them all the very best in their new venture together!

Back to things more general - we will be starting our ice hockey season off with registration and practice open to all on the last two Sundays of January, 20th and 27th Jan. We really want to encourage LOTS of new players to join, especially youngsters under the age of 14, and even more especially, girls of all ages! Please bring your friends along for FREE try-out sessions in January (their parents will need to come and sign an indemnity form if they are under 21 though).

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday 10th February at 10.00am. We want to thank you in advance for your support in 2008, and look forward to seeing you at the AGM where plans for 2008 (especially in our senior league) will be discussed, and a report on 2007 will be given.

Registration: Due to it becoming more and more unsafe to carry large amounts of cash around, we intend making The Ice Station a cash-free zone. This means when you register next year you will have two options:

  1. Pay a once-off fee of R2 400 (R100 reduction for full amount payment) by direct deposit/ EFT or cheque – no cash please.

  2. Post-dated cheques or stop order for payment of R2 500 to be paid over 10 months (R250 per month)

We ask you to respect the safety of the committee members who have had to carry cash around in the past and please feel free to discuss with us which option would suit you the best for 2008.

All members who still owe money at the end of 2007 will need to be fully paid up before they can register in 2008.

Ice time

I know the last few weeks have been confusing for everyone (me included!) as to when we have ice time and when we don’t, and my apologies to anyone who hasn’t been kept up to date on sms! (This was all due to the boards being taken down at the ice rink, meaning we could only practice, not play matches, and of course due to exams taking place and no-one being able to be at matches in any case!)

Please see the attached schedule for December 2007 and January 2008. Please note that ice hockey is officially over now and that only National Team players will be practising in December and early January. Registration starts on 20th January 2008.

All that is left to say is HAPPY HOLIDAYS, drive safe, and we look forward to seeing you in 2008.

Heather Chowles, General Secretary, WPIHA
