WPIHA runs various practices on a Sunday morning from 912 (as detailed below) (usually with the exception of the first Sunday of the month, which is dedicated to Figure Skaters). Our seniors practice on a Thursday evening 6.307.45pm (except in school holidays and the night before a public holiday). Matches are played on a Monday night (except in school holidays and the night before a public holiday).
WPIHA runs an Ice Hockey Academy where people who want to learn to play hockey (i.e. who have never played ice hockey before) are taught the skills of skating and the basics of ice hockey. This takes place for one hour per Sunday (9-10am) for 8 weeks, and the cost is R200 for all these sessions.
Once the player has completed this program, he/she can advance to becoming a full member of WPIHA. The annual fees will be adjusted on a pro rata basis, so instead of the full R2500 annual membership fee, he/she will pay a pro rata fee adjusted by the Treasurer.
During this period of 8 weeks, the player will be able to make up his/her mind if he/she wants to play ice hockey, and this will also give the player chance to purchase the ice hockey equipment needed for playing matches (only fully equipped players will be able to play in matches). We have a certain amount of second-hand ice hockey equipment available for purchase, and the Skate Shop at the ice rink has a fairly wide selection of equipment too. We have lots of skates, so please dont buy new, check what we have in stock first.
Academy
As stated above, the Ice Hockey Academy takes place on a Sunday morning from 9-10am. Once the player progresses to the full membership level, he/she will be slotted into the appropriate age and skills level.
Practices
- Our entry level players practice on a Sunday morning 910.30am.
- Our older intermediate level practice on a Sunday morning 1012 midday.
- Our seniors practice with the intermediate level on a Sunday morning 1112 midday.
Matches
Our matches take place on a Monday night. We have two levels in our league, a Junior League and a Senior League, with three clubs (Sharks, Rams and Eagles) in each level. The Junior League play from 6.30pm to 7.45pm and the Senior League play from 8pm till finish (9.30pm generally). The monthly ice-time schedule, which is distributed to members and posted on this website, gives the times of the games and who is playing.
