Equipment you need Print

To play hockey matches, and to participate in most practices, you'll need to borrow or buy a full set of hockey equipment.

You need to have:

  • an ice hockey helmet with a visor or grid
  • a neck guard
  • shoulder pads
  • elbow guards
  • an abdominal protector (especially for guys!)
  • protective pants (sometimes called a girdle)
  • ice hockey shin pads
  • ice hockey skates
  • ice hockey socks (to cover your shin pads)
  • a hockey top/jersey

Buying equipment Print

You can buy equipment new or second hand. For new kit, you can purchase some hockey equipment at the small skating store at our rink. Sportsmode (011 792 9020) in Johannesburg stocks a good range, and will post or courier to Cape Town. Or you can buy kit online at hockey suppliers, especially those based in the USA and Canada. Some good online shops are Hockey Monkey, Cyclone Taylor, and ePuck.

From time to time hockey players sell their used kit second-hand. You can contact us about second hand kit being sold through the league. Alternatively, some stores that sometimes have second-hand kit in stock are: Replay Sports (021 674 4222, 44 Main Rd Claremont) and All Sports (021 425 1056, 22 Waterkant St, Cape Town).
